SUPPORT ELECTRIC CARS!!!

Tell Obama, Congress to Support Electric

President-elect Obama plans to "put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars -- cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon -- on the road by 2015,” according to his website www.barackobama.com. The problem with this plan is that it comes in the middle of economic turmoil and financial collapse of the Big 3 automakers.

Often financial stimulus goes from the government to large corporations, and smaller innovative companies like ZAP are omitted. Over the past few decades, billions of dollars of taxpayer money have gone to the Big 3 to improve fuel-economy and support the use of advanced technologies like electric cars and almost nothing has been delivered while the industry has fought regulation at every turn. At the same time, the smaller companies that deliver receive nothing.

continue buzz

While plug-in hybrids are not in mass production today, ZAP is selling mass-produced, 100% plug-in, battery-electric vehicles with over 100,000 EVs delivered since 1994. ZAP has been experiencing record demand in 2008 with high gas prices and the fact that there are relatively few electric vehicles on the market. ZAP has expanded its workforce by 30 percent since January to help fill orders and expand its distribution. ZAP has done all this without federal support.

We like almost everything about Obama’s plan, especially converting the White House fleet to plug-ins by next year, making half of fleet purchases plug-ins by 2012, and providing a $7,000 tax credit for the purchase for advanced technology vehicles and conversions.

continue election buzz

While the US auto industry does not deserve to be abandoned by our government, at the same time, it failed to deliver on its promises and failed to follow the leadership of these smaller more innovative companies that have paved the way with virtually no government assistance. By helping these smaller companies, maybe taxpayers could do even more with less money?

We urge you to please write President-elect Barack Obama, Vice President-elect Joseph Biden, your US Senate and House representatives and other civic and corporate leaders to tell them:

ELECTION BUZZZZZ about electric cars

1) You want at least a small percent of the automaker loan bailout money and DOE grants to go to small auto manufacturers like ZAP.

2) You want to be assured that vehicles from small EV automakers like ZAP will qualify for the Federal Tax Credit, and not to limit them to conventional cars and trucks.
3) That vehicles like ZAP’s be considered for Federal and White House fleet purchases in 2009.
4) We should directly contract people to build electric vehicles.

Republicans, Democrats Agree on Electric Car

The partisan debate never stops in the US between Republicans and Democrats, particularly in an election year. That's why it is so refreshing to see unanimous bipartisan agreement on one thing, the electric car.

One need look no farther than the Presidential race to see how both candidates are firmly on the side of the fence for electric, plug-in forms of transportation. Senator Barack Obama in May proposed a $10 billion venture capital fund which would be used in part to "help American companies build batteries for plug-in hybrid vehicles so we don't have to buy them from abroad." Senator John McCain in late June proposed a $300 million prize for the invention of a battery with the "size, capacity, cost and power to leapfrog the commercially available plug-in hybrids or electric cars."

Perhaps the United States Advanced Battery Consortium has run out of funding? Maybe the candidates’ energy experts need to remind them that back in 1991 the US DOE funded hundreds of millions of dollars of research in partnership with the Big 3 automakers to develop batter batteries for electric cars. You think they would have come up with something by now, because last year ZAP with the help of Danish scientists successfully tested a lithium battery system that can propel the Xebra over 152 miles on a single charge.

For ZAP, an electric car is certainly a factor for our local city council race, or an electric truck to be specific. Santa Rosa City Council candidate Judy Kennedy parked her Lexus in her garage virtually for good since buying her ZAP Xebra Xero solar-electric pickup. With balloons and banners on her truck, she’s hard to miss campaigning around downtown Santa Rosa.

Recently, concerns had risen in Kentucky about the legality of the Xebra, a city-speed electric car and truck made by ZAP of Northern California. The Xebra meets Federal law as a motorcycle, but in Kentucky there was a law that motorcycles with an enclosed cab were not allowed on Kentucky roads.

Several Kentuckians took up the issue, led by a couple of prospective ZAP dealers and potential Xebra customers. They lobbied their local politicians who seemed interested in helping, both Republicans and Democrats.

It went even further. When the issue of making vehicles like the Xebra legal on Kentucky roads, the issue went to a vote by the bipartisan legislative committee for Economic Development and Tourism. The tally was 54-0 in favor of expanding the use of electric vehicles, a landslide victory. The most exciting moment was when Democrat Governor Steve Beshear took up the issue and passed an executive order to make the Xebra legal in Kentucky.

Of course, we should always give proper credit where credit is due. The first politician to support ZAP’s electric vehicles was not a Republican nor a Democrat. In 2007, Green Party Mayor Gayle McLaughlin of Richmond, California authorized that addition of three ZAP Xebra trucks to her public works fleet, the first fleet in the world to use the Xebra.

So, this raises the question, with all the political support for electric cars, who or what is against them or keeping them out of the mainstream?

Apple tops for brand loyalty: report

The good news for Apple keeps piling up. Earlier this year the company moved into the number three spot in the US PC market, it recorded stellar figures in a customer satisfaction survey, and now a new report says it has the highest brand loyalty among PC vendors.
While Apple largely missed out on the growth of the PC market during the 1990s as shown by its declining market share figures, it has always been the beneficiary of strong customer loyalty.

More recently, the so called "halo effect" from the iPod and iPhone, plus the "I'm a Mac" ads have contributed to an Apple resurgence. What's more the company has managed to deliver good profits at the same time as improving its market share, in part by staying out of the bargain basement.

Gartner's estimates for the second quarter of 2008 gave Apple an 8.5 percent market share, behind Dell and HP, but slightly ahead of Acer.

Since Gartner's "PC" category includes x86-based servers, its numbers most likely underestimate Apple's strength in desktop and notebook computers. While Apple does offer the Xserve, Dell and HP sell servers in huge numbers.

The most recent American Consumer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) compiled by the University of Michigan's National Quality Research Centre gave Apple a market leading score of 85 - the highest ever recorded for a company in the personal computer industry.

Second-place Dell only managed 75, and that 10-point difference between Apple and Dell was one of the largest between first and second in any industry measured by ACSI.

And now a new report from MetaFacts shows Apple customers' brand loyalty is at an all time high. How high?

continue apple tops for brand loyalty

"Apple continues to command the strongest repurchase intent of any PC brand. More than four in five (81 percent) of households with Apple as their primary home PC plan to buy the same brand - Apple - for their next home PC," said Dan Ness, principal analyst at MetaFacts.
That's not really surprising. Switching from a Mac to a Windows based PC is a bigger decision than replacing say a Dell with an HP. But in practice, the true brand loyalty may be even higher.

MetaFacts found that the more computers there are in a US household, the more likely one of them is a Mac.

"Like the camel slipping its nose under the tent, Apple is reaching into American households as the second or third home PC," said Ness. "Where Apple shines is as the third PC, ranking fifth with 8 percent of third home PCs, and ranking fourth in notebook PCs, also at 8 percent of the installed base."

So even if you consider a Mac to be your primary computer, planning to make your next PC purchase from another brand does not mean forsaking Apple completely. For example, you may be thinking of buying a netbook - a segment where Apple does not (currently) compete.

MetaFacts also noted that Apple's strength in notebooks is visible in public spaces. "If you look around at a Starbucks or cybercafé, you might think the whole world's gone to Apple," said Ness. "Apple users are very active and use their notebooks in more locations than Windows notebook users."

Continue apple tops for brand loyalty

When it comes to home computers, 21 percent of Macs are used in public places, compared with 12 percent of Windows-based systems. Since Apple is selling approximately three notebooks for every two desktops (including servers), that's not really a surprise.
For the industry as a whole, notebook sales are just about level with desktops, though in July, Mika Kitagawa, principal analyst for Gartner's Client Computing Markets group, noted "Home mobile PCs continue to have momentum in the US market... US professional units look to have been affected by tightening IT budgets as U.S. business responded to growing economic uncertainty. Desk-based PCs gained traction among some professional users."

MetaFacts also found that Apple households are different: they are younger, more highly-educated, and have higher incomes. When shopping, you're more likely to see them in Barnes & Noble, Borders or Target than non-Apple owners, and less likely to be in a Wal-Mart.

I suspect those shopping habits are linked to the demographic factors and have nothing to do with using a Mac. Wouldn't you expect bookshop patrons to be on average better educated and with a higher income than customers of a store that bases its pitch on low prices?

And MetaFacts says Mac owners use their computers differently, too - "more often for web content creation, graphics and personal activities." Throw in the finding that people using Macs at work are predominantly in five occupational groups - teacher, artist/designer/performer, management, clerical, consultants - and there's still life in the old stereotypes.

MetaFacts surveyed more than 10,000 US adults by phone and online, with respondents selected to be representative of all US adults and households. The company has been conducting its Technology User Profile surveys since 1983.

Welcome to Florida!

The Ortiz family and staff at Foreign Affairs Auto planted a tree on Earth Day to commemorate their new electric car dealership for ZAP (www.zapworld.com) in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Continued Article

Family owned and operated since 1982, Foreign Affairs is branching out into gas-free electric vehicles to stay on the cutting edge of transportation. Studies show electric vehicles can reduce air pollution and ownership costs compared to gasoline. The vehicles are priced a little over $11,000 and are estimated to cost between one and three cents per mile. ZAP says an electric car can reduce fueling, maintenance and operating costs, and overall they are about half the cost of owning a gasoline car.

"My family started this dealership 26 years ago with the idea of offering a premium level of products and service," says Jonathan Ortiz of Foreign Affairs. "As part of the next generation, I believe the best way to reach the next level for our business is to get in on the ground floor of advanced automotive technologies. Our new division, Foreign Affairs: Zero, will be marketing vehicles like the ZAP Xebra."
